For you history buffs, it is believed that Sveti Vlas was founded by the Tracian tribe Larisi at the end of the 2nd century BC, and was then called Larisa. It was renamed Sveti Vlas in 14th century AD after Saint Blaise, the patron saint of cattle growers and merchants. During the Ottoman rule (late 14th-19th century AD), the village was known as 'Manastir' ('Monastery') or 'Kyuchuk Manastir', named after the five monasteries which had been built in the vicinity. Unfortunately, none of these monasteries has survived to present day. Officially, it restored its name of Sveti Vlas after the reunification of the Bulgarian state in 1886. St. Vlas is the only resort in Bulgaria with a completely south facing sandy beach complimented by its many excellent restaurants, bars and shops. A beer there can cost less than €1.
